Right? For the vast majority of the history of the Catholic Church, the nuclear family was not the most important part of family life. Extended families caring for and supporting one another have always been an important part of Catholic culture. (Note my family name: I’m speaking from personal experience as well as as knowledge of history. The first American Finn in my line came to the U.S. from Ireland in 1896 and most of my extended family are Catholic. Some of them work for the Church.)

The bishop’s position on that is … well, it’s nothing short of ridiculous. I think he was telling the truth the first time. I think what he objects to about the Black Lives Matter movement is that it calls out police for violence and racism, and I think that angers him, even though it doesn’t have the first thing to do with Catholic beliefs or practices.
