Reminds me of my first gay bar in Des Moines, Iowa. Everybody called the small windowless space The Question Mark, but I don’t know what its name actually was.

The only sign was a small question mark in an alley off a side street downtown. You definitely had to know it was there, probably by reading underground publications.

I was thinking the other day how funny it is that Out In New Jersey, a publication I write for, has its roots in those pulp paper gay-bar-guide days.

Did you ever use the international Spartacus Guide? I found it very useful in Europe! It’s still in existence today in an online version, pretty much the granddaddy of gay bar guides.
