Reminds me of a story. My gay partner and I were sitting in the US consulate in Montreal one day watching pretty much everybody else file out one at a time after they got their business done. We sat and waited and waited and waited, even after the consulate had officially closed.

I was just there to renew my US passport, which was only supposed to take a few moments.

But I evidently made a "mistake" filling out the application. I mentioned that I was applying for a renewal in Montreal because it was my new home and I was currently awaiting my Canadian permanent-residency paperwork.

So, instead of just processing my passport application, consulate staff went into some sort of emergency mode. Or something like that, lol.

I got called into an interview room and had to answer a slew of questions, that mostly seemed designed to discover if I intended to revoke my US citizenship, which I had no intention of doing, and which I explained clearly several times.

I found the whole thing a little bizarre, frankly. I had a right to have my passport renewed, and whether or not I intended to become a Canadian citizen, which consulate staff also seemed intensely curious about, was none of their business.

I eventually got my new US passport, but what a pain in the ass the whole process turned out to be.
