Really interesting and well presented. Thanks!

Just as an aside, when I was learning Russian and studying Soviet society, I learned that physicians in the Soviet Union were very poorly paid and often could not support a family on their salary. This struck as odd given how much the Soviets boasted about their health care system and took pride in it. And not without reason.

Then I learned that Soviet-era physicians were disproportionately women.

Because being a doctor was seen as women’s work, it just wasn’t very well paid. That’s all part of the past now, but I thought it was interesting to show how other societies also classify work by gender and devalue women’s work.
