In a bit of good news, though, PRRI’s latest survey, which just came out, reveals that for the first time the number of mainline Protestant Christians in the United States is increasing, while the number of Evangelical Protestants is decreasing.
In fact, there are now more mainline Christians in the US than Evangelical Christians.
That’s a fairly startling development that overturns recent assumptions about institutional Christianity in the United States. It may be a reaction to Trump, with some Evangelicals becoming too uncomfortable with politicized Christianity to remain with their denominations.
