Raising my hand from northern Michigan to say amen.

By the way, when I lived in Germany for most of the 1980s, neger (which at one time was a socially acceptable equivalent to negro) was already well on its way to being universally received as an offensive slur.

It has since all but completely lost any positive connotation. Here is an interesting article from 2013 describing how some literary people resist acknowledging neger’s current offensiveness.
