Quite to my surprise, some P&G marketing people saw this story and reached out to me. They confirmed my initial impression that the request had indeed been low key and kind. And they tell me that this is really their own idea. It struck them as a sort of low-key change that could be helpful to some people without hurting anyone else. So they ran with it. Then the shouters got ahold of it. Oops.
