Instead of crafting policy based on national interests and international legal norms, the administration catered to conservative Christian supporters vested in the Rapture, specifically to the belief that Jerusalem must be the capital of Israel to satisfy supposed preconditions for Jesus' return in the clouds.
Evangelical and other conservative Protestants in the US celebrated the decision while the rest of the world mostly gasped in shock.
