Priscilla is a sweet, funny, intentionally scandalizing film that probably packed a more powerful emotional punch in 1994 than it does today. I think every queer person in the universe watched it, sort of amazed that it actually happened.
Its success probably enabled the filming the next year of To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar, also a road movie featuring drag queens and/or trans people played by straight actors, but set in the American heartland.
It wasn’t as big as Priscilla, but did win some critical acclaim and was pretty popular at the box office. It’s worth a watch if you’re interested in pioneering queer road movies. It’s a bit dated now, but its heart was in the right place.
I doubt it will go on to the sort of classic sleeper status as Priscilla, though.
