Powerful piece, Jeffry J. Iovannone. I’ve been publicly silent since the death of George HW Bush, wondering if challenging the narrative would be appropriate or effective during his funeral.

I wasn’t at the White House ashes action. Can’t remember why anymore. Something boringly practical prevented me from going. But I keep thinking about it and all the issues as people eulogize Bush.

I remember my friends who died as Bush made those insensitive and inaccurate remarks about behavior.

I remember how outraged we all were. The public panegyrics that have dominated the news cycles have rekindled the outrage in me, at least.

I don’t see any reason in speaking ill of the dead, but I equally don’t see the need to erase real history.

Thanks for your article!
