Personally, when I write about Africa I try to use the names of nations or internationally recognized regions like West Africa, which share proximity and at least a certain amount of culture.

But to group two nations like South Africa and Côte d’Ivoire together as “sub Saharan” makes very little sense. They are as different from one another as either is from a nation in the north like Morocco or Tunisia.
