People make the argument all the time that we need to be careful trying to overturn entrenched, traditional social customs and norms — that they probably exist for good reasons we don’t fully understand, and tampering with them is dangerous.

When it comes to LGBTQ folks, especially transgender people, even self-identified progressives make that argument routinely and with a straight face.

The argument frustrates me to the point that I want to pull my hair out.
