Parenting a child who has challenges is so hard. You want to protect them from everything. But you must protect them from your protection. And that’s so hard to accept.

The boy I raised did not have autism, but he did have serious mental health challenges, and I struggled with his very real need for independence.

It all worked out fine in the end, but there are no easy answers.
