Out on bail? Allowed to use a cell phone in jail?
Can you imagine a Black man being afforded either of those privileges if he had murdered a man the way Chauvin viciously murdered a man?
It’s sickening to see the system treat Chauvin as privileged even though practically every American has seen video evidence of what a depraved monster he is.
These privileges are little things, perhaps. But they’re sickening little things that demonstrate overt, unapologetic racism — demonstrate disdain for Black lives.
Americans need to be enraged about Chauvin. As a nation, if we had any moral fiber, we’d be struggling to contain calls for Chauvin’s blood. The sheriff’s department ought to be spending big money paying officers to work overtime to protect Chauvin from the righteous rage of American citizens calling for his execution.
But that’s not how it goes, is it?
Lynching is for Black people. The Chauvins of this world get cell phones in jail, shoulder pats, and release on bail. Video evidence clearly shows murder in cold blood? Oh my, how inconvenient for poor Chauvin.
What a sick, racist country we are.
