One year, my late husband and I participated in Manhattan's Pride parade from the SAGE float. Lenny was a long-time SAGE volunteer, and I sometimes helped out at events the queer-elder program sponsored at the Greenwich Village LGBT community center.
All those years ago, back in the 90s, queer communities were working on challenges presented by social isolation and involuntary re-closeting of queer elders.
SAGE has now expanded into a national network, and I find myself (astonishingly!) at an age where I actually qualify for their services – and in a reality (living in a conservative rural community) that helps me appreciate how necessary those services are.
I'm glad you chose to write about these issues during Pride month, because we as a community still have a lot of necessary work to do with respect to supporting queer elders.
