One reason that things are so scary in the United States is that we queer people have lost the protection of the judiciary at the highest levels.

For decades we have presumed that the courts would protect us at least somewhat from the tyranny of the majority.

However, with the Supreme Court’s hard turn to the right, and its appetite to overturn precedent in favor of reactionary policies and laws, everything is up for grabs now. Ultra-conservative state governments have almost nothing checking their worst impulses.
