One comforting thought here, and something very important to understand (that Trump himself probably doesn’t get), is that the military people in the Pentagon are staffers not command officers.

No civilian in the Pentagon has the ability to issue lawful orders to any military unit. Only command officers in the unified command structure can do that.

Of course, Trump sits at the top of that structure until January 20th. But Trump has so thoroughly alienated the unified commands that it’s almost impossible to imagine any of their senior officers lifting a finger for Trump unless his orders were strictly legal and above board.
