Oh, my goodness, heartwarming and funny!
Some gay men could do with a refresher course on these lessons too. 🤣
I mean, there is such a thing as traditional gay male culture. Speedos at the beach, flamboyant mannerisms, certain manners of speaking, love of opera and choral music, tasteful interior decorating, certain breeds of dogs, etc.
These are certainly stereotypes, but they're also culture that we ourselves can tend to enforce, in ways that are not always healthy.
I don't know if you've seen the HBO Max series "The Other Two," but it contains cutting (and often hilarious) examinations of pop gay culture.
I'm thinking of season two and "The Insta-gays," a friend group that seemed to embody gay stereotypes. It took a long time for the gay main character to realize they don't enforce stereotypes, and that there is a big difference between enjoying culture and being the culture police.
I was surprised to see such a complex subject treated with nuance on mainstream television. (The series became a surprise hit, and season three is available now, though I haven't watched it yet. I hear reports that it's as refreshingly good as season two.)
Your Aunt Li sounds like the sensible, warm-hearted type who wouldn't need a show like that to explore the difference between stereotypes and culture, but some of us gay men might be different stories, not always understanding the difference between enjoying our traditional culture and trying to enforce it in negative ways, even if unconsciously.
