Oh here's another subtle one: How about memories that are only memories of remembering something?

I think sometimes the act of recalling an event that happened decades ago — especially when our internal conversation focuses the recollection into a story that makes sense — can sort of gradually "overwrite" whatever direct sense memory we have.

So, over time, we end up mostly remembering our memory. If that makes sense.
