Of course, we should remember that upholding the rights of oppressed minorities is a matter of human rights, which is a concept definitional to modern democracy. So I would say that urging or even pressuring a government to stand up for human rights is not (and cannot be) a matter of interfering with democracy. It can't be, because denying minorities fundamental human rights is not a legitimate function of democratic government. It's a function of populist authoritarianism.
