Of all the omnipresent negative public commentary I’ve seen about The 1619 Project, practically none of it seems informed or detailed. Practically none of it looks like genuine criticism. It looks instead like emotional distancing and denial.

You know, some people do criticize Jewish people for writing or talking about the Holocaust. They do so in disturbing tones that sound very much like the people criticizing The 1619 Project.

The difference is, the people criticizing folks who talk about the Holocaust are generally dismissed as immoral anti-semites.

But we just can’t bring ourselves to honestly address our own history, can we?
