Author’s Notes —
While I’ve imagined the details of this dialogue, Brad told me all about the evening in question and the fallout. Even the part about his mom’s boss calling halfway through their drinking session is real. I don’t know why I’ve remembered that bit over the decades.
To tell the truth, I think I envied Brad a tiny bit. He was kind of shocked his family came around so easily, and so was I. I don’t know much about his childhood, and I don’t feel comfortable going much further out on a fictional limb, but clearly the situation was more complex that you might assume from the way his story kicks off.
