My take on all this is a bit different, Jon. I think mainstream press are misreporting the story, overlooking the fact that Francis is asserting the right of the Catholic Church to have a stake in who is legally allowed to marry –whether those people be Catholic or not.
Francis is still denying the right of LGBTQ people to marry, and he still opposes the right of same-sex couples to adopt children. There is little in what he said during the filming of this documentary that represents any positive change.
