My state of Michigan recently required all public schools to offer free breakfast and lunch to all students. This removes the stigma from students who used to qualify for reasons of poverty. The new law also requires school districts to sign up for the federal school breakfast and lunch program, which provides funds to significantly fund the meals.
Believe it or not, some school districts and some states don't sign up for the federal program for ideological/political reasons, leaving hungry kids out in the cold.
There's no excuse for that, just as there’s not excuse to refuse to accept federal funds to expand their Medicaid programs, which leaves poor families out in the cold on healthcare.
As you say, monsters.
