My mother’s friend, an Army chaplain, tried to talk me out of joining the Corps, using coded language to tell me I wasn’t masculine enough or tough enough to make it. I took great pleasure of wearing my dress blues one day and “accidentally” running into him and saluting him. He had the good grace to look embarrassed, at least.
