My late husband's mother Rose was a Jew from eastern Poland who all but abandoned her Polish identity after coming to the US before the war. She would describe herself as Jewish, as an American citizen, which she was intensely proud of, and would say that she had once lived in Poland. She was quick to point out that she was not Polish and maybe she never saw herself that way even when she lived there.
I know the situation in Ukraine is different from in Poland, but it really is something to see Jewish people proudly identifying as Ukrainian. It's significant, and at least to me, quite unexpected and positive.
