My late husband was also a non-practicing Jew, Geraldine DeRuiter, and I relate to so much of what you’re saying.

I learned to make a damn fine matzo ball soup, by the way, and I even learned how to render chicken fat and spread it on toast instead of butter.

I got to the point where I’d start reminding him of upcoming holidays.

As a gay couple, things were a little different for us, of course. Plus, he was quite a lot older than your husband. Different generation, but I still got a chuckle out of the similarities.
