My dad watches the Andy Griffith Show every day, and I usually catch it while I’m making his dinner. It’s a lovely show, really, full of ideals of love, generosity, forgiveness, and neighborliness. But it utterly ignores racism and sexism, even when the subject of “wife beating” comes up in one episode. Mayberry is a great place to live if you’re a white man with a job. But women are seen to face crisis if they’re widowed or left by their husbands. men without jobs are run out of town. And not a Black person is in sight. Ever. Mmmmmmmm…..
