‘Moon Over’ Chapter: Late night intimacy

The Love word is in the air as Ian and Dima chat late at night about what they mean to each other and how they can reconcile their opposing worldviews. Meanwhile, the KGB is much closer than even Juliette fears. Peltsin is on the move with a car full of men with hypodermic syringes.

I’m afraid I have no interesting real-life anecdotes to illustrate this chapter other than to note that my inspiration for this photo was the memory of a particularly grungy bathroom my friend and I once found gracing our cheap hotel room in Athens — when we were very young and more interested in affordable digs in the city center than in luxury.

Oh, and those hypodermics? That comes from a particular briefing I received once in Berlin where my colleagues and I were warned to steer clear of Vienna, which was spy central during the late Cold War. Somebody told a story about an intel officer being almost kidnapped in circumstances involving a powerful muscle relaxant. I don’t think the story was true, but it made for good fiction fodder. Oh, and Vienna? It was particularly lovely in the 80s. What can I say? I’m incorrigible. Always was!
