Ian, Dima, and the gang have done it! Together, they’ve smuggled Dima out of East Germany. Now, the real adventure begins! But this third and final act begins with a reminder that all is not resolved. How will our American Air Force officers deal with the reality that they’ve conspired with “enemies” of the United States?

Author’s Notes:

When drafting this novel, I drew much of Act III from my own experience island hopping the Greek Cyclades in the 1980s. As a youth, history fascinated me, particularly ancient history and the history of philosophy. Backpacking around Greece and the islands inspired me to be more serious about learning. You might see some of that interest reflected in the next several chapters!

Athens’ airport was my first (but by no means last!) experience with facilities that didn’t meet what I assumed to be “first world” standards. I hesitate to use terminology like that, but Ian and Mark are both naive, so I put the words in their mouths. Juliette reacts, but doesn’t lecture. I think she’s an expert at choosing her battles. She’d have to be. The tension seems to fly over Dima’s head; he has no basis for comparison, after all.

The descent into Athens’ airport over the mountains can feel dramatic. Too bad Dima was asleep for it!
