Author’s Notes:

Pretty much any American military person who served in Berlin in the 70s, 80s, or early 90s would remember Snoopy’s. Located just a few hundred yards from Tempelhof’s main gate, and much closer to the Airlift Memorial and former airport entrance, Snoopy’s was a crowded dive that hopped pretty much every night. Americans often loved serving in Berlin because of how welcoming Berliners were, a sentiment that dated back to the Airlift when the Americans defeated a Soviet blockade.

The Airlift memorial, pictured in the chapter, sits right where “Red Baron Street” butts up against Tempelhof. Snoopy, perched above the bar’s door, raised a glass of perpetually foaming beer in seeming salute to the memorial.

Snoopy’s itself bustled with young American airmen and plenty of young Germans hoping to make new friends (or more). It was kind of a pickup bar, but not in the stereotypical sense of foreign women hoping for rich American husbands. Berlin working people of that era typically made more money than Americans, and much more than American service people.

Let it also be said that more than a few American gay airmen and soldiers made amorous liaisons with German men at Snoopy’s. Berlin didn’t earn its reputation as a queer mecca for nothing!

The bakery (Backer Weidermann) at the current site of the former Snoopy’s The Doner Kebab shop next door looks unchanged. How many times I ate there after a night out is impossible to estimate!
