Meanwhile, back in East Berlin, Dima’s powerful uncle Arkady faces tough choices over the rise of democratic protest. Uncle and father hold their breath while Dima prepares for the last stage of his journey.

Traveling in the Greek islands is fun for lots of the reasons. Some of the small ones, like los, are awesome in how unchanged they are. Other than the introduction of electric lights, you can imagine yourself in a world unchanged for millenia. Santorini, however, while packed with history and full of unchanged nooks, is a transportation hub and tourist mecca nonpareil. For me, ending an island-hopping jaunt in Santorini is a good way to transition back to the real world.
Back to Berlin where I lived in 1989. Understand that the events of November were entirely unimaginable in August. Nobody thought the Wall would or could fall. Nobody dreamed the Warsaw Pact would collapse. Events that seem inevitable now appeared impossible then. This helps explain the uncoordinated and lethargic Soviet response to the rise of protest.
