Author’s Notes:

My memories of climbing the volcano at the center of Santorini’s Caldera primarily center around extreme heat, thrist, and beating sun. The climb is not particularly strenuous, but if you do this (and you should!) don’t neglect to bring plenty of water. And don’t be like me and try it when you’re hungover! (Ah, the foolishness of youth.)

Ian is probably incorrect about linking the myth of Noah’s flood with the flooding caused by the Santorini volcano. Most scholars believe that Noah’s flood came from storytelling in the Fertile Crescent. He might be interested, however, to read about how the Santorini eruption probably spawned a tsunami that caused the Red Sea to recede briefly, perhaps birthing a different famous myth.
