Ian is plotting furiously to get his (boyfriend!) Dima out from behind the Iron Curtain. Just how far will Ian go? Looks like he’s willing to do whatever it takes. But why is he feeling so guilty? Meanwhile, Dima is mourning the end of everything he knows and loves. He’s determined to act, but oh, the price! Oh, and those two men hanging outside Mark’s and Ian’s apartment? Looks like they might have some wrenches to throw in the works.

Author’s Notes:

When plotting this story, I asked myself how Ian and Mark could check to see if the strange men surveilling their place were Germans, Americans, or Soviets. How would you check to find out what somebody’s native language was if it really mattered? Experts say that startling somebody into an involuntary expletive or unconscious response is the best method.

By the way, while I never had any personal experience with espionage when I was living in Berlin, I saw plenty of sanitized intelligence reports detailing the massive presence of not only Soviet assets, but also East German ones. While Berlin wasn’t quite the hub of human intelligence at that time as Vienna was, it still bustled.
