As I wrote the first draft of this chapter, I was about midway through part of my life when I practiced eastern-style meditation for about an hour every day. Daily meditation and running, in fact, helped center me enough to finish this project during troubling personal times. Revising the manuscript after setting it aside for several years is a real process of discovery for me. I’ve split this chapter in two for online purposes. Part two, coming up Thursday morning, surprises me in that even though the writing is very bad (I may burn the manuscript after finishing revising it!), I still largely agree with my former self.
