My friends and I really did enjoy spending time on Ios, and we really did have wild philosophy debates and discussions with Constantine (not his real name), a professional academic philosopher who spent his summers tending bar at his family’s hotel. His brother fished for squid every night and made the best fried calamari I’ve ever tasted. His son Solon (who at the age of 13 had large portions of The Republic memorized) regularly devastated Mark and me at chess, which rather bruised our egos, the two of us fancying ourselves accomplished players.
