Molecular phylogenetics is able to pinpoint a crossover date to sometime in the 1920s by observing genetic changes in HIV that proceed at a predictable pace. Geneticists have been able to examine the question in several different ways, and they’re getting very consistent answers.

There’s another case in the 1960s, btw, in Texas, where a teenage boy probably died from complications of AIDS caused by HIV 1.
