Many straight people are true allies of LGBTQ people, unlike the NYPD, which oppresses queer people. But please note that nothing in my article suggests that any individual should not come to Pride. Quite to the contrary, actually, if you have a look toward the end of the article if you haven’t made it that far.

But uniformed representatives of the NYPD, an institution that is actively oppressing queer people right now, have no business being part of an event that exists explicitly to protest their oppression.

That’s the part that should not be controversial.
