Lovely, Sherry Kappel. Moving. I’m remembering my own elderly cat and her struggles with hyper-thyroiditis. The ending was much the same.

I can’t imagine the hatred. Lenny and I picked our cat out together and kept her all during the years we attended a synagogue much like the one in Pittsburgh.

Our friend Hilda was a Holocaust survivor. It could have been her. Thinking about it makes me shudder.

Was the country like this when I was a boy? We had our problems. Racism was bad. Terrible, really.

But people didnt shoot up houses of worship and schools. Not regularly. Hardly ever at all.

A Squirrel Hill or even a “minor” school shooting with a handful of victims would have brought the nation to a gasping, mortified standstill.

What is happening to us?
