Lovely sentiment, thank you! I'm reminded of a thread on Twitter in response to my recent letter to a homophobic Catholic bishop in Michigan where I live.
All I did was ask the bishop to temper his rhetoric and to understand that religious condemnation often has violent, real-world consequences.
So naturally, somebody who calls herself Happy Catholic on Twitter had to respond with clobber passages and really hateful language, like calling gay people abominations.
She defends herself by saying God used that language, not her. 🙄
And she's just dug in to using really hateful language about queer people. She's proud of it. She clearly sees it as a virtue. And she's not open to any argument that would lead to her tempering her hate speech.
Clearly, neither is the bishop.
Just as clearly, it would be really difficult for a queer person to worship with somebody like that and maintain a sense of dignity or even robust mental health.
Thank you for your article reminding queer Christians that they don't have to!
