Of course, there’s also the other side of the coin, which is erasure. Just as it’s important not to fall into the trap of believing we live in a post-racial society, we should remember that we live in a society where being gay, contrary to much popular sentiment, often presents unique and troubling challenges.

While I quite agree that your acquaintance’s comment was itself troubling, I don’t quite agree that your son’s physical and personality traits are on the same order of significance as his sexual orientation.

I’d love for that to be true! And I’m sure one day it will be. Probably not while either of us is still living, however.
