Long story short, some boys were apparently roughhousing during class, and apparently the problem had been ongoing. The teacher told one of the boys that touching other boys is what fags do. Then he told the other boys in the class that they should call boys fags if boys touch them. (Note that none of this touching was alleged to be sexual. We're talking about 10 year olds being disorderly or disruptive.)
The boy's parents complained to the school principal, who told her she didn't see a problem with the teacher's disciplinary technique.
Then the mother contacted me, and I wrote an article in a mainstream queer publication that went kind of viral in Oklahoma.
Many other families contacted me, including parents who complained that the teacher routinely organized games of "tag the fag" on the playground.
The teacher, who is a United Methodist pastor, then made a statement saying that at almost 60 years old, he can't be expected to know all the words that are considered unacceptable today.
I wrote another article naming him, and that went viral too, but ultimately, nothing changed. Neither the teacher nor the several administrators who had his back was disciplined.
The teacher/pastor has since explained that he now knows the word fag is offensive. Can you see me rolling my eyes? Sigh...
