Lion’s Den chapter alert and author’s notes!
David’s out of jail, shocked and enraged by the charges against him. He has no plans to attend his own gallery opening, but when events conspire to drag him there, what he finds is almost as shocking as being accused of murder.
When David mentions “eccentric party-circuit types who you have no idea why they’re there, but you see them at every opening,” he may as well have been referring to me and my partner Lenny. Gallery openings were important parts of our social life, and if “free cheese and Prosecco” weren’t precisely why we went, we were seldom shy at the buffet.
Highly conceptualized art, eccentric artists, and even more eccentric gallery goers always made the art scene worth doing. Much like meeting and befriending Quentin Crisp without appreciating what an icon he was, famous artists didn’t impress me nearly as much then as they might now.
