Likewise, in the U.S., rates of sexual violence against women in prison are sky high. Very few people care. Activists who push for prison reform are met with deaf ears from leaders of both major political parties.

U.S. women prisoners tend to be raped by male guards. The incidence of rape is high in the federal prison system and in state prisons. No prisons in the United States are safe for women.

Pretty much nobody cares.

But as soon as a transgender woman who presents as a woman, and who is at very high risk of rape by male prisoners in men's prisons, asks to be transferred to a woman's prison, suddenly everybody starts to scream and shout and run in circles – even when that trans woman has managed to document years of constant rape.

The hypocrisy is stunning and raw.
