Let’s not kid ourselves. When we wrap our minds around the fact that senators representing only 11% of the American people can block wildly popular laws, we can get a sense of the heady power senators enjoy.
It’s no coincidence that US senators, almost without exception, become wealthy despite relatively low pay.
Being a senator is one hell of a gig. If we think that the majority of these senators place public service above their own interests, we’re in denial.
I wish that were not true, but the last couple years have just been tremendously instructive.
Our system is broken, and the dysfunction of the Senate and senators is a huge part of the problem.
