Just to clarify something here. Protective custody in the federal penal system is considered torture by many incarceration-reform advocates. It consists of solitary confinement for 23 hours a day in a tiny cell with nothing to do, no TV, movies, or screens of any kind, and usually not even books.
People have been down to suffer extreme mental health crises after periods of such "protection." I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.
