Just goes to show how easy it is (for the insincere) to use statistics or other mathematics to obscure reality.
Reminds me of a principle I learned in math once: A very small number increased by a very large factor remains a very small number. (My teacher has me graph out tons of equations when I expressed doubt about that. 🤣 And, lol and behold, his mathematics PhD had not led him astray. 😉)
That principle applies well to percentages, which are just specialized sorts of factors. You can throw around what look like big numbers, only to find that they hardly change the original number.
Your point is well taken. The anti-trans crowd want to eat their cake and still have it. Out of one side of their mouths, it's:
"Too few transgender people exist to take their needs and rights into account."
But out of the other:
"The percentage of trans people is hugely increasing. Run in circles, scream and shout!"
Of course, actual numbers remain very, very low, but it's easy to throw around big percentages for the scare factor.
And that's really the problem. They're trying to sow fear over something that should not inspire fear.
There's nothing wrong with being trans. Nobody is being harmed. In fact, trans people are living happy, fulfilled lives.
Why should anyone fear that or fear-monger by playing numbers games?
