“Just be glad we aren’t throwing you off roofs like they do in Saudi Arabia,” is a typical conservative response to stories about problems with equality in the U.S. I try to drolly reply, “Do you want me to thank you for not throwing me off a roof?”

(Pointing at that gay people in Saudi are not thrown off roofs tends to be a pointless exercise. Yes, the Kingdom has very harsh anti-LGBTQ laws on the books, but they also have a thriving (if quite secretive) gay subculture, and in the last couple decades it appears that the only people imprisoned or executed for homosexuality have been men who raped men or boys. So the situation is complicated.)
