Jewelry too! I wrote a story once about being very young and doing political canvassing. I knocked on a door and met an attractive man with a dangling lambda earring. I knew very little about anything gay at the time except that I was. And so was my boss! I did not recognize that earring, but slowly it dawned on me, and by the time I finished my pitch, we were flirting with each other.
This was in 1982, I think.
By 1990, I was wearing the Silence = Death shirt or the equivalent pin pretty much every day. And I loved the Don't Panic line.
There is really important points about the importance of fashion in activism. Thank you for an excellent bit of queer history!
