Jakub Ferencik, I admitted privately to myself when I was 16 that I was an atheist, and for reasons that had little or nothing to do with my sexuality, at least not consciously.

Like many gay men of my generation, I left home home as soon as I could and headed to more tolerant parts of the world, never to look back.

Nobody in my church ever knew that I had stopped being able to believe, or that I was gay.

I started a new life and gradually came out to the people in it — people I trusted to be progressive and tolerant.
